Why Llandudno makes such a good golf base in North Wales

Llandudno sits at the heart of one of the finest concentrations of golf courses in Wales. Within a few miles of the town you have championship links, parkland courses, and dramatic coastal layouts — each offering something distinct, and all set against the backdrop of Snowdonia and the Irish Sea.

It is the kind of place where you can play North Wales Golf Club in the morning with the Conwy estuary at your shoulder, drive ten minutes to Conwy in the afternoon for a round on one of Wales' most celebrated links, and be back on Arvon Avenue in time for a quiet evening. The town itself — the restaurants, the promenade, the views — is part of the break, not just the golf.

Maesdu Golf Club

Designed by five-time Open Champion James Braid, Maesdu sits just across the railway line from its neighbour and offers a distinctly different character — more open parkland than classic links, with gorse-lined fairways, a gently undulating layout and some of the most spectacular panoramic views in the area. The elevated 18th tee looks out over Llandudno, the Great Orme, West Shore and North Shore simultaneously. Founded in 1915, Maesdu is part of the North Wales James Braid Trail and has hosted events including the Ladies Senior Home Internationals and the original Penfold Tournament.

It is a more forgiving test than its championship neighbours while still offering a genuine challenge, and the club is warmly welcoming to visitors, societies and casual groups. Golf Weekend Llandudno

Ideas for a weekend golf break in Llandudno

Two or three nights is the sweet spot for a Llandudno golf break. Enough time to play three or four courses, enjoy the town in the evenings, and return home having genuinely unwound. Here is how a long weekend might look.

1

Day One — Arrival & Warm Up

Arrive in the afternoon, check in at The Rosedene and get your bearings. A relaxed nine holes at Great Orme Pitch & Putt makes the perfect arrival-day stretch — scenic, short, and only minutes away. Spend the evening in the town: dinner, a walk on the promenade, and an early night before the main event.

2

Day Two — The Links Experience

A morning round at North Wales Golf Club on the West Shore — a proper championship links with the estuary at your shoulder and the wind doing what wind does. Take your time over it. In the afternoon, drive ten minutes to Conwy for a second round on one of the finest links courses in Wales, or rest and explore the town before dinner.

3

Day Three — Parkland & Departure

A final morning round at Maesdu before checking out. The James Braid layout offers a completely different character from the day before — parkland rather than pure links, with those elevated views from the 18th tee that make the perfect send-off. Drive home via the A55 knowing the next trip is already being planned.

Return to comfort. Walk into town.

One of the pleasures of basing a golf break in Llandudno is that the town itself earns its place in the trip. Check in, change out of your golf shoes, and within five minutes you are on the promenade with the Irish Sea in front of you and a decent restaurant around the corner.

The town centre is a short walk — restaurants, bars, the Victorian pier, coastal walks and independent shops. The promenade is particularly fine in the early evening, and the views back towards the Great Orme from the North Shore make a natural end to a day well spent on the course.

Then back to The Rosedene for the kind of night's sleep that a day in the wind and on the fairways tends to earn.

Three nights, four courses, and one of the best breaks we have had in years. The Rosedene gave us exactly what we needed — a quiet, comfortable room, free parking, and everything Llandudno has to offer on the doorstep. Conwy Golf Club from here is a ten-minute drive and absolutely worth it.

A brilliant base for a golf weekend. The rooms are beautifully done and the location means you can walk into town for dinner without thinking about a car. We played North Wales and Maesdu back to back and felt like we had been away for a week. Exceptional.
