An Italianate coastal village that feels like stepping into a different world — colour, design, gardens and coastal atmosphere. A standout day trip for guests who love beauty and escapism.

Portmeirion sits about an hour south of Llandudno, making it a perfect full-day excursion. The village was built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis as a celebration of Mediterranean architecture and is now Grade I listed. Every corner reveals something unexpected - a piazza, a colonnade, a hidden garden path, a bronze statue gazing out to sea.

The gardens alone are worth the visit. Covering 70 acres of woodland and coastal grounds, they include a Battery Gardens with sweeping estuary views, a walled garden, and exotic plantings that thrive in the mild microclimate. The village itself is pedestrianised and unhurried - this is a place to wander, stop for coffee on a terrace, and lose track of time.

Portmeirion is also famous as the filming location for the 1960s cult television series The Prisoner, and fans of the show make a pilgrimage here from all over the world. There is an excellent hotel and restaurant on site, several shops, and a pottery - the Portmeirion tableware brand was inspired here. Day ticket admission is required to enter the village.
